Grace McClean’s contemporary musical about 11th century abbess Hildegard of Bingen brings a fresh perspective to the nun’s artistic legacy. Working with Mannes Opera, we created a hybrid version of this 4-person show that brought in an entire chorus of opera singers, blending Bingen’s music with McClean’s against a modern backdrop that evoked the monastic cells of Bingen’s life with repetitive gestures: drawing of circles and piling of stones that evoked the routines and worships of life in a convent.
